When these homeowners moved into their newly built home in Mountain, Ontario near Kemptville, they quickly realized that while the house itself was beautiful, it didn’t yet feel like home. The open-concept layout felt unfinished, disconnected, and lacked the warmth and personality they were hoping for.
Rather than undertaking a large-scale renovation, they chose a more focused and intentional approach through a personalized interior design consultation followed by a guided showroom shopping experience.
During our in-home consultation, we walked through the space together and discussed the areas that weren’t functioning for them emotionally or practically. We identified their pain points, talked through how they truly live day-to-day, and explored the aesthetic direction they naturally gravitated toward.
One of the biggest discoveries was that a traditional formal dining room simply didn’t align with their lifestyle. As a couple who lives quite minimally and rarely entertains, they wanted the adjoining dining space to feel relaxed, functional, and comfortable rather than formal or overly styled.
From there, we developed a clear vision for both the living room and adjoining sitting area — focusing on warmth, comfort, scale, simplicity, and intentional design choices.
Following the consultation, we booked a showroom shopping trip where I guided them through selecting:
- Living room furniture
- Accent seating
- Artwork
- Area rugs
- Lighting direction
- Supporting lifestyle decor pieces
The goal was never to overfill the space, but rather to create balance and softness through carefully chosen furnishings and a few meaningful styling elements.
The homeowners embraced the minimalist direction beautifully, incorporating a small number of decor accents exactly where they would have the greatest impact. The result is a calm, cohesive, and elevated open-concept space that feels authentic to how they live every day.
This project is a perfect example of how thoughtful design guidance — even without construction or renovation — can completely transform the feeling of a home.
